The times didn’t
seem to have any pattern and they felt like menstrual cramps.
At 11 am Grandma Larson showed up at our house to ask me if
I wanted to go shopping with her. I said fine, but she could
tell something was up. So, I told her that I had been feeling
some cramping. Well, she got very excited! We decided to go
ahead and go shopping. We went out looking for shower gifts
and prices for your baby shower. It was fun – but having
contractions while shopping was interesting. After a few hours
we met Daddy at Olive Garden for lunch. By this time the contractions
were about 15 mins apart. I ate so much spaghetti –
probably too much, but I was hungry. I apparently was carb
loading because I ate six breadsticks and all of my spaghetti!
After lunch, Daddy and I went home and started
to make sure that we had everything ready to go to Grandma’s
house. I wanted to labor at home before heading over. The
labor classes that we took suggested that I sleep, shower,
eat, drink and walk during early labor. So, I took a bath
and checked my email. Then I labored some in bed and tried
to nap. At 6:30 pm we headed over to Grandma’s house.
On the way I had 6 contractions – it’s only a
10 min drive so they were about 2-3 mins apart and lasting
about 30 secs. When we finally got to Grandma’s everyone
was so excited.
Instead of just sitting around we all went for
a walk around the block. When we got back to the house the
contractions were stronger so I got out the birth ball and
started laboring on it. Your Daddy was very supportive and
he was ribbing my back the entire time.
It was hard to know when to call my midwife
Gina. Aunt Tracy kept telling me “you’ll know”
– but I never had a definite feeling. I guess it was
probably around 8:30-9 pm and I was starting to get pretty
serious. I REALLY wanted to get in to the
tub! Because of this, Daddy knew to call Gina. Gina wanted
me to wait until she got there for me to get into the tub,
but she did let me take a shower – which ended up not
being such a great idea. I didn’t like laboring standing
up. The next two hours were pretty intense. I don’t
really remember much – but I do know that Grandma Messmer,
Aunt Tiffany and Uncle Erik all made it before Gina did.
Gina got there about 11 pm and checked me –
and thank GOD – I was fully dilated. This meant that
I could get in to the tub. This was great news because I was
at the end of my rope. I was certain that if I wasn’t
dilated enough to get into the tub, I was going to lose it!
When Gina announced that I was fully dilated the entire family
was surprised and very excited.
Let me just say – the bathtub was like
taking all the pain meds they could give me. It was a different
world.
At about 11:30 I started pushing. My first few
pushes were pretty wimpy. I wasn’t quite sure what I
was doing. But, since your heart rate decreased, Gina had
me get out of the tub to squat in order to help get you moving.
That is where I started to really push. As soon as you started
to crown, Gina had me get back into the tub.
It was not long now. Only a few more pushes
and you were here! The last two pushes were pretty intense
but totally worth it. At 12:15 am you were born and everyone
cheered. Gina kept you under the water and you opened your
eyes – then Daddy and I both lifted you up to my chest.
I stared at you in amazement and Daddy had a huge smile on
his face. My first words to you were “Hi baby –
Hi Jordan.” No one seemed to want to know what gender
you were – so I picked you up and screamed “it’s
a boy!” The whole room cheered again. After a few minutes
I looked at my mom and exclaimed “holy crap.”
After that Daddy and I kissed your forehead and held you while
Gina started cleaning up. Daddy got to cut the umbilical cord.
The rest of the night is a blur. Each family
member got to hold you and then we nursed for the first time.
There was a lot of cleaning up and recovering. Daddy and I
couldn’t sleep – we were too excited and amazed
that we were parents. You were such a beautiful baby. You
looked a lot like Daddy.
Welcome to the world my baby Jordan!!!
